Wubi unfortunately doesn't solve my problem: I want a Linux wireless connection that uses my Windows hardware. I know that Linux doesn't support my USB dongle, even with ndiswrapper.

I feel your pain, Albertde. While I do not have your problem, I have wireless stability issues, esp after my computer wakes up from suspend mode.

On the plus side, with each passing moment, someone will surely come up with whatever is needed to get your device to work. You just have to wait for it! ;)

The more I read, the longer I am gonna wait to install ubuntu. Some issues remind me of windows XP.

Win7 is fine so far, but I do like the idea and will change at some point in the future.

If you haven't do so, just get the Desktop CD and play with it - it's a Live CD - meaning you can run the OS off the CD without installing anything. Play with the cute penguin until you're sure that they don't bite. ;)

You would need to select the option "Demo and full installation" as depicted in one of the pictures above.

I have been playing with penguins for some time and I have not got bitten yet :-) I do know a buddy who installed linux over their windows partition by accident once, ouch! Great hub and thanks for the free laughs!

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 with Wubi directly from the internet. So far I am fairly happy with it. First of all, I am getting rid of buggy, virus and trojan-laden Windows and kissing Bill Gates good-bye (I hate his policies) and also you get tons of free software for Linux! You can use lots of your Windows programs on Linus with WINE. It is fast, dependable, no security problems. There is a learning curve of a couple of days while you get used to the new filing and installation systems. And you will want to spend a few days looking through the Ubuntu software center to hook yourself up with all the programs you need.

For those who are scared to take the step: Don't be. If you install Linux Ubuntu the way I did, with Wubi, your Windows installation will NOT be affected. When you start up your computer, you can select which operating system you want, whether Windows or Ubuntu. So you can keep your Windows and not lose it! If you don't like it, you can always uninstall it from Windows. But I think you will like it. Ubuntu is the only Linux OS right now that you can download directly through Wubi. i agree... but how do you work with window based applications...you know my internet dongle doesnt support ubuntu..i treid using it through winehq...but still it doesnt work... any help

-Not all programs work on WINE. But have you tried keying in the particular program and Ubuntu into Google and see if others have managed to get it to work?

-Not sure what you mean by internet dongle. ADSL/Broadband modem? Anyhow, you can try keying in the model number of that dongle together with Ubuntu in Google and hope for the best.

I get download ubuntu-10.04-beta2 desktop version and really work well for me. It is quite good to have ubuntu for your daily computer work. It is very nice information and really great hub.

I use Vmware rather than Dual booting windows and Linux. There will be no problem in dual booting windows and Ubuntu. Unlike some Linux distributions you will not find a problem running Linux along Windows because Ubuntu also made its operating system windows friendsly. Still i use Vmware where i run Unix servers, Linux desktops and servers and windows servers and the guest operating systems running on Vmware can utilize the network resources from the host operating system (where Vmware is installed like for example you installed Vmware on Linux, then Linux becomes host system)or you can dedicate a network card to a guest operating system running in Vmware. Its a cool thing you can learn more on installing various operating systems under Vmware in my blog.

For heavens sake, is there no simple solution to getting wireless using WUBI Ubuntu? Seriously Ive wasted almost an entire day just trying to find the best method to getting my wireless card to be detected by scanning forum after forum, but so far nothing.

I did install ndiswrapper but i cant find the .inf file required to detect it. Frustratingly, I can only assume my wireless is incompatible, but if thats the case how was I able to use Ubuntu on the virtualbox and get wireless internet no problem, the only issue being the overall speed.

Hi dave,

Try google for "Ubuntu/Linux + + problems", etc. If nothing comes up, chances are there is a problem with your installation, not the driver.

Assuming that your wireless card is a well known one, try doing a fresh install and see whether you have the same problem.

Also note that on some notebooks, like mine, wireless is on by default (unlike in Windows, where you need to turn it on with a button) but without the wireless LED being on.

Beyond these, I can't offer much help, I am afraid. -_-

Tarun,

Did you restart your PC with it? If so, you need to get back to Windows and run from there. Also, you will need to uninstall any previous Ubuntu WUBI you may have - WUBI will prompt you for this.

Hello there. I'm about as nooby as nooby can be with these things, but I HAVE installed ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop, and it's great :)

Now I want to upgrade the 10.04 on my desktop to 10.10, but want to keep a Windows partition as my image software is, alas, all pc based.

When I installed 10.10 on my laptop, it gave me 3 partion option, one of which was installing it alongside another OS. (this is the option I want) But installation on the desk top only allows me to erase and reformat the whole drive (maybe much later) or partition manually. The manual option loses me completely I'm afraid, and I need an idiots guide to set this partition. I only use Windows now for my dreamweaver and photoshop. Everything else is ubuntu side.

Please help a keen, but 2 week old ubuntu baby :)

Hi sdh,

I am not sure I understand you completely; if what you want to do is to upgrade your desktop's ubuntu 10.04, you can either do an offline upgrade:

or upgrade from 10.04 itself:

(It works the same for 10.04 to 10.10 upgrade)

Use the 2nd option as it is easier, and especially if you have a good internet connection. ;)

Why do you need to partition when its already installed?

Hello there, and thanks for your rapid response. Sadly "I don't understand you" is a phrase I hear too often, so I'm sorry if I confuse you!

If I can attempt to clarify...

I need to keep windows and ubuntu on my pc.

As I understand it (and this may be where I'm going wrong...) the hard drive will split its resources between the two, effectively halving it.

If that's the case, then I don't need much memory given over to the windows side, and can save it for the ubuntu side.

I'm happy to take whatever is going though, as long as I can still use both.

The problem with my installing 10.10 was that it didn't allow me to keep both, and only offered the full reformatting.

However, are you suggesting that the links above will just upgrade the ubuntu, and keep the existing partitions as they stand? If that is so, then it sounds like a good solution!

My main pc is in my studio, so I can't access it till tomorrow. I can try out the direct upgrade then.

installing Ubuntu on a Windows partition means that you are performing an install of Ubuntu on an existing Windows partiton as opposed to installing one on a new Linux partition which is more difficult and risky to do. It's a case of which one is safer for a Linux newbie.

I tried to install the demo and full installation of Ubuntu 10.10 from a live CD in Windows XP (SP3), but the installation failed. I haven't tried using the second option (install within Windows). Should I try that?

Also, the size of wubi.exe which I downloaded from the website is slightly smaller (1.39 mb) than the one on the CD (1.43 mb) [I downloaded the ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso file.]

Hi Alien,

The size is different probably because the wubi.exe from the website is still WUBI 10.04 NOT 10.10. Use the WUBI from the CD instead as it is meant for 10.10.

I have no idea why your installation failed but I would definitely go for the WUBI (Windows Install) option as it is more (Windows) user friendly.

Hi Dense,

Please ignore my earlier post! I was able to install (Windows Install) Ubuntu finally. I placed the iso file (not the files on cds after burning the iso file) and the wubi.exe downloaded from windows installer in a single folder. This wubi file is 1.4 (1.39) mb, whereas the wubi file on the live cd (which you get after burning the iso file) is 1.43 mb. And it worked!

Please i would like to know if the disk reformance issue mentioned during the wubi installation is much of a problem...Also i hear that ubuntu's ext4 file system is better than window's ntfs...Is this true?

Not sure if I understand you correctly, but Ubuntu runs better in its own partition in ext4 than in WUBI (ntfs), of course.

And if, by the words "disk reformance", you are referring to the disk errors during installation, they are not a problem anymore, those are from some early alpha versions I encountered, I think. ;)

If you're good in IT/software, go ahead and try ext4, otherwise better to stick to WUBI and get familiar with Ubuntu. :)

I've installed ubuntu 10.40 (win part.), everything went smoothly but after reboot there is no bios option for win/ubuntu, and then win xp starts as normal. Any idea why? Please help!!:)

Hi j f sebastian,

Assuming that you have got everything right, try checking your hard drive for errors (-happened to me!). Also, install to C: drive, not D: drive or any other drives.

Other than that, I can't help you much but encourage you to search Google for: ubuntu no boot up menu / ubuntu no boot up loader.

You might also want to try reinstalling Ubuntu.
