Install Ubuntu 10.10 On A Windows Partition With WUBI

Ubuntu 10.10 vs 10.04: Reasons To Upgrade
-Improved Pulse Audio, good esp if you are still having issues with sound
-Faster bootup times
-Oneconf; which allows you to save all your app settings, and restore it later. Still early days, though.
-New Unity UI, Gui for Ubuntu Network Edition (Ubuntu Light)
Next release of Ubuntu is scheduled for November 4th, 2010 - Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 1 (Natty Narwhal).
2010 Oct 10, Update: How Do I Know For Certain If Ubuntu 10.10 is already released yet? Google
for "Ubuntu 10.10", click "Latest" on the left sidebar, and look at the
twitter updates that come scrolling in intermittently. When everybody says it is already
released, it should be. ;)
Note: According to this page at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1590098, even Canonical has no
idea when exactly it is going to be released, so be patient! More ways to be informed on actual release, on the page itself. :)
2010 Jul 15, Update: WUBI (-the single file download) is not available for Ubuntu 10.10 (now at Alpha 2) yet, in case you need to know. Anyhow, if you are a Linux noobie trying out WUBI, the last thing you want is an Alpha/Beta version, so stick to Ubuntu 10.04. You can, however, install using WUBI Ubuntu 10.04 (Karmic Koala) and then upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat). ;)
Note: This is written for Ubuntu
10.04 and above, namely Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, 11.04,
etc... It will also work for earlier versions, where WUBI is included, but why would you want to do that? Get the latest version! -_-
I know penguins are cute, but do they bite?
Installing Ubuntu on a Windows partition means that you are performing an install of Ubuntu on an existing Windows partiton as opposed to installing one on a new Linux partition which is more difficult and risky to do. It's a case of which one is safer for a Linux newbie. ;)
On a technical knowhow needed of 1 to 5, with 1 being the easiest and 5 being the hardest, this is definitely a 1, as all you have to do is to click. No need terminal commands, as was the case in the past.
If Linux has put you off because you previously failed miserably installing or configuring it, you should look at it again now with new eyes. ;)
I have the whole installation process documented here minus some boring screens in-between. Scroll downwards to the pictures and have a look at how easy it is. See? It is no longer as scary as before! :D
What is WUBI?
WUBI stands for "Windows-based Ubuntu Installer" and comes standard on the Ubuntu Desktop CD.
System Requirements:
OS: Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000/98
Memory: 256 MB
Hdd Space: 5 GB available
WUBI Installs the Ubuntu file system to "c:\ubuntu\disks\root.disk",
and a swap file to "c:\ubuntu\disks\swap.disk".
These are virtual containers and you don't get to see the inside of the containers which is a good thing as they won't mess up your Windows file system.
The downside of using WUBI as opposed to a real Linux filesystem on a separate partition is that Hibernation is NOT supported. I think of that as NOT YET so I won't be too worried about it. By the time you get used to Ubuntu and Linux, hopefully, someone will have perfected the Hibernation part. If it's a big issue for you, you can always install Ubuntu in its own partition later.
Another limitation that you must bear in mind, should you be unable to boot it up one day is - Ubuntu is configured as a container file (root.disk) in Windows, so if one day it happens that that file is "unclean" as a result of a hard shutdown (ie Windows crashed and burned!), you will need it to pass Windows disk checking (chkdsk) before it can boot up as the file has been corrupted in Windows NOT Linux. That means there are 2 layers of disk checking that you
should be aware of.
And now Ladies and Gentlement, the part you've been waiting for ...
Install Ubuntu 10 On A Windows Partition
Method 1: WUBI CD install:
Note: Though this article was originally written for an earlier version of Ubuntu, it works the same for Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) too, as everything remained the same.
1. Start by going to Ubuntu's download page and decide on which version you want:
For
ordinary users and Linux newbies, you will want to have the Desktop
version, it's easier to use. Also regardless of whether your machine is
running on a 64-bit capable CPU, if you prefer to run 32-bit
applications, you will want to get the i386 version, NOT the AMD64
version. If you don't know what this means, just trust me on this one
and get the i386 version. :)
So we have now decided on going for the i386 Desktop version, which if you search for it, leads us to a filename with a name like: ubuntu-10.04-beta2-desktop-i386.iso (which at the moment of writing this hub, is the most current version).
Netbook
users will have to look for a netbook version; there are 3 different
versions depending on the processor on your netbook.
2. Right click and save the file to your computer. Depending on how fast your broadband is, make yourself a nice cup of mocha or go do some work. ;)
*You might also want to consider getting the torrent version,
if you know how to download it and especially if your connection is
prone to being cut off. Believe me, you don't want to lose the download
somewhere near the 600MB mark. -_-
**If on the other hand, you're reading this cause you have forgotten how to upgrade, you might one to check out this other hub of mine which made use of the ALTERNATE version (NO WUBI).
3. Ok, you're back! Which means, you have managed to get the file. :)
Now follow the instructions at the picture gallery below:
Ubuntu 10 Installation: Visual Guide
And finally, ta daa ... the Ubuntu 10.04 desktop!
An Even Easier Way!
Method 2: WUBI single file web installer (WUBI.exe):
Note: WUBI installer does not seem to be updated yet, even after Ubuntu 10.10 is officially released. Use the other method. :(
After having this published, an even easier way has come to my attention; instead of getting the CD with WUBI in it, you download the WUBI installer, which will then download Ubuntu for you and then install everything for you without burning the CD. A 1-step method, if you will.
The website is: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer and it still only has WUBI 10.04, NOT WUBI 10.10 the last time I checked. If you followed the link, downloaded and upon installation, still see 10.04, try Method 1 instead. :(
Which method to follow?
If you need to have the CD (for multiple installations, or to run in demo mode - to just look and see whether Ubuntu is for you), follow the main article's method. On the other hand, if you have already decided on installing Ubuntu and want the convenience of a single click, choose this method. I have not tried this method yet, so no pictures are available. Sorry!
What If the latest version WUBI Is not available yet?
If you're getting an early Alpha or Beta version of Ubuntu, chances are that the latest version of WUBI is not on the Desktop CD nor available for download as a single file internet install yet. This is because WUBI is normally one of the last items in the development schedule. Even if this is the case, you can still get the current available version of WUBI, install Ubuntu, and then update to the latest Alpha/Beta/RC (Release Candidate) version of Ubuntu.
System Requirements:
OS: Vista/XP/2000/98
Memory: 384 MB
Harddisk Space: 5 GB available space
Some Ubuntu WUBI errors you may run into:
Ubuntu Installer's Pyrun.exe No Disk Error:
"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive
Cancel | Try Again | Continue"
-This
is due to having more than one removeable media - memory cards, cd,
iso, etc - in your PC. Choose the "Continue" option, up to 20 times, if
you have to. The errors are caused by each drive you have, and it is not
looping, though it gives you the impression. You can also stop and
eject all removeable media (or disable them if you need to) before you
run pyrun.exe.
(More solutions later ...)
Conclusion, and some words about penguins
You're done! Pat yourself on the back and sip some more mocha! :)
More to be added later. Like how to configure Ubuntu 10.04. And like this tutorial, it's easier than before. As you can see in the Ubuntu desktop post-installation picture, I already have the Wifi and sound icons, and that means those are already working out of the box. So it's more like tweaking Ubuntu to suit your needs rather than configuring hardware drivers. See ya! :)
Btw, penguins are known to bite HARD if you get too close! :D Don't be fooled by their impeccably tailored suits.
Is this picture tutorial easy to follow?

I feel your pain, Albertde. While I do not have your problem, I have wireless stability issues, esp after my computer wakes up from suspend mode.
On the plus side, with each passing moment, someone will surely come up with whatever is needed to get your device to work. You just have to wait for it! ;)
The more I read, the longer I am gonna wait to install ubuntu. Some issues remind me of windows XP.
Win7 is fine so far, but I do like the idea and will change at some point in the future.
If you haven't do so, just get the Desktop CD and play with it - it's a Live CD - meaning you can run the OS off the CD without installing anything. Play with the cute penguin until you're sure that they don't bite. ;)
You would need to select the option "Demo and full installation" as depicted in one of the pictures above.
I have been playing with penguins for some time and I have not got bitten yet :-) I do know a buddy who installed linux over their windows partition by accident once, ouch! Great hub and thanks for the free laughs!

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 with Wubi directly from the internet. So far I am fairly happy with it. First of all, I am getting rid of buggy, virus and trojan-laden Windows and kissing Bill Gates good-bye (I hate his policies) and also you get tons of free software for Linux! You can use lots of your Windows programs on Linus with WINE. It is fast, dependable, no security problems. There is a learning curve of a couple of days while you get used to the new filing and installation systems. And you will want to spend a few days looking through the Ubuntu software center to hook yourself up with all the programs you need.
For those who are scared to take the step: Don't be. If you install Linux Ubuntu the way I did, with Wubi, your Windows installation will NOT be affected. When you start up your computer, you can select which operating system you want, whether Windows or Ubuntu. So you can keep your Windows and not lose it! If you don't like it, you can always uninstall it from Windows. But I think you will like it. Ubuntu is the only Linux OS right now that you can download directly through Wubi. All others you must download the ISO image and burn onto a CD before installing. Here's where to get it: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-i
i agree... but how do you work with window based applications...you know my internet dongle doesnt support ubuntu..i treid using it through winehq...but still it doesnt work... any help
ya... but what about things such as window based applications.. my internet dongle doesnt support ubuntu... i tried winehq..even though doenst work.. any suggestions...
@biggig:
-Not all programs work on WINE. But have you tried keying in the particular program and Ubuntu into Google and see if others have managed to get it to work?
-Not sure what you mean by internet dongle. ADSL/Broadband modem? Anyhow, you can try keying in the model number of that dongle together with Ubuntu in Google and hope for the best.
Best of luck. ;)
Wow, Its really a cool information. I have heard about ubunto but never have installed. but soon i will install it. Its so simple and easy to install.
Good one, Dense. 10.04 is the first Ubuntu version that seems usable for everyday work.
I get download ubuntu-10.04-beta2 desktop version and really work well for me. It is quite good to have ubuntu for your daily computer work. It is very nice information and really great hub.
Thanks for the kind comments, guys!
Ubuntu is more stable than before, it's true! :)
@askpowers: Try it! The install is basically: click, click, click! It's that simple! ;)
I use Vmware rather than Dual booting windows and Linux. There will be no problem in dual booting windows and Ubuntu. Unlike some Linux distributions you will not find a problem running Linux along Windows because Ubuntu also made its operating system windows friendsly. Still i use Vmware where i run Unix servers, Linux desktops and servers and windows servers and the guest operating systems running on Vmware can utilize the network resources from the host operating system (where Vmware is installed like for example you installed Vmware on Linux, then Linux becomes host system)or you can dedicate a network card to a guest operating system running in Vmware. Its a cool thing you can learn more on installing various operating systems under Vmware in my blog.
ubuntu is sucks I tried it with in dual with windows 7 but it's no use.
For heavens sake, is there no simple solution to getting wireless using WUBI Ubuntu? Seriously Ive wasted almost an entire day just trying to find the best method to getting my wireless card to be detected by scanning forum after forum, but so far nothing.
I did install ndiswrapper but i cant find the .inf file required to detect it. Frustratingly, I can only assume my wireless is incompatible, but if thats the case how was I able to use Ubuntu on the virtualbox and get wireless internet no problem, the only issue being the overall speed.
Hi dave,
Try google for "Ubuntu/Linux + + problems", etc. If nothing comes up, chances are there is a problem with your installation, not the driver.
Assuming that your wireless card is a well known one, try doing a fresh install and see whether you have the same problem.
Also note that on some notebooks, like mine, wireless is on by default (unlike in Windows, where you need to turn it on with a button) but without the wireless LED being on.
Beyond these, I can't offer much help, I am afraid. -_-
Good luck! :)
Now i have the chance to try Ubuntu
Hello dense.. i'm trying to install new ubuntu that is 10.10... but when i run wubi, i dont get the option "install inside windows"...why the hell is that man ?? i want to install ubuntu inside windows only.. help me man..
Tarun,
Did you restart your PC with it? If so, you need to get back to Windows and run from there. Also, you will need to uninstall any previous Ubuntu WUBI you may have - WUBI will prompt you for this.
Hello there. I'm about as nooby as nooby can be with these things, but I HAVE installed ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop, and it's great :)
Now I want to upgrade the 10.04 on my desktop to 10.10, but want to keep a Windows partition as my image software is, alas, all pc based.
When I installed 10.10 on my laptop, it gave me 3 partion option, one of which was installing it alongside another OS. (this is the option I want) But installation on the desk top only allows me to erase and reformat the whole drive (maybe much later) or partition manually. The manual option loses me completely I'm afraid, and I need an idiots guide to set this partition. I only use Windows now for my dreamweaver and photoshop. Everything else is ubuntu side.
Please help a keen, but 2 week old ubuntu baby :)
cheers
SDH
Hi sdh,
I am not sure I understand you completely; if what you want to do is to upgrade your desktop's ubuntu 10.04, you can either do an offline upgrade:
http://hubpages.com/hub/Ubuntu-Offline-Upgrade
or upgrade from 10.04 itself:
http://www.kongtechnology.com/2010/04/06/how-to-up
(It works the same for 10.04 to 10.10 upgrade)
Use the 2nd option as it is easier, and especially if you have a good internet connection. ;)
Why do you need to partition when its already installed?
Hello there, and thanks for your rapid response. Sadly "I don't understand you" is a phrase I hear too often, so I'm sorry if I confuse you!
If I can attempt to clarify...
I need to keep windows and ubuntu on my pc.
As I understand it (and this may be where I'm going wrong...) the hard drive will split its resources between the two, effectively halving it.
If that's the case, then I don't need much memory given over to the windows side, and can save it for the ubuntu side.
I'm happy to take whatever is going though, as long as I can still use both.
The problem with my installing 10.10 was that it didn't allow me to keep both, and only offered the full reformatting.
However, are you suggesting that the links above will just upgrade the ubuntu, and keep the existing partitions as they stand? If that is so, then it sounds like a good solution!
My main pc is in my studio, so I can't access it till tomorrow. I can try out the direct upgrade then.
many thanks
SDH
SDH,
:D
You don't need to mess with your partitions. Just upgrade, and keep your old settings. ;)
Hey! Whaddya know?
It worked!
Happy am I, ready for a celebratory beer. Many thanks for your help,
best
SDH
installing Ubuntu on a Windows partition means that you are performing an install of Ubuntu on an existing Windows partiton as opposed to installing one on a new Linux partition which is more difficult and risky to do. It's a case of which one is safer for a Linux newbie.
save my system,
Why are you quoting verbatim from my first paragraph? :/
I tried to install the demo and full installation of Ubuntu 10.10 from a live CD in Windows XP (SP3), but the installation failed. I haven't tried using the second option (install within Windows). Should I try that?
Also, the size of wubi.exe which I downloaded from the website is slightly smaller (1.39 mb) than the one on the CD (1.43 mb) [I downloaded the ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso file.]
Hi Alien,
The size is different probably because the wubi.exe from the website is still WUBI 10.04 NOT 10.10. Use the WUBI from the CD instead as it is meant for 10.10.
I have no idea why your installation failed but I would definitely go for the WUBI (Windows Install) option as it is more (Windows) user friendly.
Good luck! :)
Thanks for a quick reply! I will try the Windows install as you suggest.

Hi Dense,
Please ignore my earlier post! I was able to install (Windows Install) Ubuntu finally. I placed the iso file (not the files on cds after burning the iso file) and the wubi.exe downloaded from windows installer in a single folder. This wubi file is 1.4 (1.39) mb, whereas the wubi file on the live cd (which you get after burning the iso file) is 1.43 mb. And it worked!
Sorry for taking a lot of space on your hub page, and for all the bother.
And thanks for your support and interest.
Please i would like to know if the disk reformance issue mentioned during the wubi installation is much of a problem...Also i hear that ubuntu's ext4 file system is better than window's ntfs...Is this true?
Not sure if I understand you correctly, but Ubuntu runs better in its own partition in ext4 than in WUBI (ntfs), of course.
And if, by the words "disk reformance", you are referring to the disk errors during installation, they are not a problem anymore, those are from some early alpha versions I encountered, I think. ;)
If you're good in IT/software, go ahead and try ext4, otherwise better to stick to WUBI and get familiar with Ubuntu. :)
Hi
I've installed ubuntu 10.40 (win part.), everything went smoothly but after reboot there is no bios option for win/ubuntu, and then win xp starts as normal. Any idea why? Please help!!:)
Hi j f sebastian,
Assuming that you have got everything right, try checking your hard drive for errors (-happened to me!). Also, install to C: drive, not D: drive or any other drives.
Other than that, I can't help you much but encourage you to search Google for: ubuntu no boot up menu / ubuntu no boot up loader.
You might also want to try reinstalling Ubuntu.
Hope that helps!
:)
thank you all guys and speciall Dense for making this hub so informative now i will surely try all the stuff whichever available on the hubpage.

Wubi unfortunately doesn't solve my problem: I want a Linux wireless connection that uses my Windows hardware. I know that Linux doesn't support my USB dongle, even with ndiswrapper.
